We are wrapping up the final few weeks of Phase 1, which is the basic sciences courses. This is another exciting milestone we are about to pass.
For the ND side (along with the chiropractic side), Phase 1 has a total of 108 credits, and some of the breakdown includes the following:
- 23 Credits in Anatomy
- 17 Credits in Physiology
- 13 Credits in Pathology
- 5 Credits in Microbiology
- 8 Credits in Biochemistry
These courses are very important, as they are the foundation of our medicine. A principal in naturopathic medicine is treating the cause, not just the symptoms. To do that, it is important to know and have a solid understanding of the concepts, pathways, and anatomy we learned in the basic sciences. I’m excitedly nervous to begin Phase 2, the clinical sciences. I imagine the material will continue to grow on everything we have learned so far.
In the meantime, I have started studying for the NPLEX Part 1 Exam, which is a board exam for naturopathic medical students. I will take it in February, so I have to keep reviewing everything I have learned over the last 1.5 years to make sure I am constantly using it, and applying it. Our school courses do a great job at this, but it is important to put in a significant amount of time on our own to studying for boards.
