Last weekend was homecoming, so we had a four-day weekend. I attended homecoming sessions thanks to a sponsorship from NUHS alumni Dr. Roger Schlade, one of many alumni who generously covered the cost for a student to attend.

I learned a lot about caring for concussions with both physical and internal medicine, and I now feel more equipped to manage a concussed patient’s care using nutrition and supplementation.

There was a hands-on session about the use and applications of kinesiology tape, and it intrigued me to the point of wanting to take a weekend seminar on it in the future.

Although insurance isn’t the most exciting topic, it’s a very important one and I learned about proper documentation for ICD-10 and how doing it right the first time can save you a lot of time and hassle later on.

Some of NUHS’ research faculty presented on new research that they’ve completed regarding the improvement in low back pain with the use of customized insoles and chiropractic treatment.

On Saturday, I went home to Manitowoc to spend time with my family over Father’s Day weekend. The timing was nice because relatives from Florida and California were visiting. We spent a lot of time outdoors at the pond swimming, paddle boating, and just hanging out. My vitamin D synthesis was working full-speed — the weather was very hot and sunny!

Getting off-campus and away from the books was refreshing, and now I hope my batteries are sufficiently recharged to make it through the next two weeks of midterms!

I'm a naturopathic medical student at NUHS. I started the Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine Program in January 2014. I was born and raised in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a beautiful town on Lake Michigan. My experiences interpreting (Spanish to English) in nearly all medical specialties solidified my decision to study naturopathic medicine, as I saw a deep need for treating the body as a whole, getting to the root causes of symptoms, and using minimally invasive low-cost therapies to restore health.
