One reason why I chose NUHS is because I value integration. There are several types of future health professionals on campus, including students of naturopathic medicine, chiropractic medicine, acupuncture and oriental medicine. Each profession has its own unique strengths and perspectives. Being in an educational setting where there is overlap with different ways of approaching natural healing provides the fertile ground for interesting and creative ideas, conversations, relationships, and connections to emerge. 

Health Care Collaboration

Being a naturopathic medicine student, I have taken the vast majority of my Phase 1 basic science courses along with chiropractic students. Being in class with them has broadened my perspective on the role that physical structure plays in supporting health. I have spent a lot of time learning along with chiropractic blogger, Hannah Synon, practicing thoracic, lumbar, and cervical manipulation techniques together. I have a great appreciation for maintaining structural integrity. I am also in classes with students who are dual-enrolled in other programs, such as naturopathic medicine students who are also studying acupuncture or oriental medicine. It is always great to hear them share their knowledge and perspectives, as they add so much value to my big picture learning. Classroom integration with students of other healthcare focuses has definitely expanded my sense of healing systems, perspectives, and modalities.

Besides classroom integration, I also want to discuss how much I value being a student alongside such incredible people. I engage in conversations with both students and professors outside of the classroom, which has greatly enriched my learning, integration, application and critical thinking about the material I have learned so far. This is critical to developing skills that are essential for working with future patients and health professionals.

I am incredibly grateful to walk this journey with the NUHS community. The relationships I am developing now will remain after I graduate. Being a student at NUHS has been a great opportunity for me to explore my passion of naturopathic medicine while simultaneously opening up my perspective to other ideas of natural medicine and developing meaningful relationships with others.

My name is Katie Kavicky-Mels, and I am in my last year of the Naturopathic Medicine program at NUHS. I am a naturopathic intern at the student clinic in Lombard. I live in beautiful Door County, Wisconsin, but I currently live on campus. My roots are deep in nature, and I enjoy camping, hiking, foraging and campfires.
