Hello! My name is Mary Simon, and I am a naturopathic medical student at NUHS. I started the Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine Program in January 2014 on the flex track, and I’m currently in my 6th trimester.

I was born and raised in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a beautiful town on Lake Michigan. I lived there until my second semester of senior year of high school, at which point I went to Paraguay as an exchange student for a year. Upon my return, I attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and earned my bachelor of science degree with a major in Spanish. Between completing my bachelor’s degree and entering NUHS, I worked for the Madison Metropolitan School District in the Health Services Department. I also did freelance work with several hospitals and clinics in Madison, Wisconsin, as a Certified Healthcare Interpreter™.

I found out about naturopathic medicine by a quick web search during my undergraduate degree, and I instantly knew that this was the path I was supposed to follow! My experiences interpreting in nearly all medical specialties solidified my decision to study naturopathic medicine, as I saw a deep need for treating the body as a whole, getting to the root causes of symptoms, and using minimally invasive low-cost therapies to restore health.

When I’m not in class or studying, I can usually be found at home, in the fitness center, or at the Morton Arboretum relaxing with my husband, Luis. I enjoy living a simplistic lifestyle and immersing myself in nature as often as I can.

Here are some topics I’m excited to write about: study strategies, conferences, school/family balance, clinic services, and pros/cons of being on the flex track. I welcome and ask for your suggestions for blog post topics! I want this blog to accurately reflect my life and my perspective as a naturopathic medical student while transmitting information and topics that interest you. Please contact me at [email protected] with any feedback, questions, or suggestions.
