Diverse Classes at NUHS

by Nov 19, 2021

When I began the chiropractic program at NUHS, I never realized all of the different topics we would cover. From reproductive systems to the musculoskeletal system, I have been exposed to so many different forms of information this trimester.

Pregnancy 2

In “E&M GI, GU, and Reproductive Systems,” we have learned about normal pregnancy and pregnancy complications, along with breastfeeding and disorders. I have really enjoyed how the class has offered many homeopathic remedies that have greatly coincided with what we are learning about in botanical medicine this trimester. For example, arnica can be utilized to ease the bruising and swelling post delivery; and belladonna can be utilized when a woman experiences extreme nervousness and agitation or hot skin during labor. We also have been learning about perinatal and postpartum depression. I had no idea how prevalent it was, as it affects 10-15% of women and up to 28% of women living in poverty. It is also important to remember that partners can experience this depression as well. Postpartum depression can be due to many causes, including nutrient deficiencies, hypoglycemia, food allergies, and neurotransmitter imbalances. Since perinatal depression affects so many women, it is important that all pregnant women be screened at least once. It is awesome learning so many vastly different topics, as any of the topics discussed could be our primary focus in our own practice one day.
