Well, here we are. Two weeks into the trimester and things are already moving very quickly! I am really enjoying my classes and I am really looking forward to diving deeper into the material. As of right now, I think I’m going to enjoy my thoracic and viscera anatomy lab most of all. We are very, very lucky to be able to preform cadaveric dissections in this program and it is truly an incredible experience!

This week, we were able to dissect around the heart and even view inside its chambers. Our professor, Dr. Pearlstein, was a surgeon for over 40 years before teaching, and is able to glance at the bodies and point out conditions or variations in each body. For example, with one glance at the heart walls he could tell us that our individual had hypertension and a severe heart murmur. Being able to actually see (and put our hands on) the physiological changes that occur in different states of health is really beneficial as a future health care provider.

This week we also had our Club Lunch, a sort of “welcome to NUHS” for our new Tri 1 students. The event was Wednesday during our lunch break and gave we upper Tri students a chance to meet our new peers, as well as gave the student clubs time to present what they do on and off campus and recruit new members. That being said, the free catered lunch is a nice perk as well!!

This trimester I stepped up as President of the Sports Council Club. In this club we meet and discuss evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitative techniques that are geared toward athletic populations, we have guest speakers teach us how to get involved in sports chiropractic, and we even have the chance to shadow/volunteer as medical staff at a few local sporting events (under our interns and supervising chiropractors). Thus far, we have been putting together a list of events for the trimester and planning our discussions out piece by piece. I look forward to sharing our events on the blog this trimester!

Finally, to close out the week, my brother came to visit from New Mexico! He flew out for a long weekend as a little 21st birthday gift to himself. It has been nice having him here to visit and we’ve definitely had a busy weekend. St. Petersburg has so many things to do it’s easy to fill up free time. We went to a couple of local breweries, saw a movie, went to the beach, and even found a Taco and Beer Festival in downtown St. Pete! I enjoyed hosting him for the weekend and can’t wait for my family to come visit again soon.
