Over the past year I have been very involved with the ACA Sports Council (ACASC) as a member of the student executive committee, serving as the 2nd Vice President of the organization. We were super excited to host this event in Long Beach this year, but alas, COVID got in the way and forced us to transition to a virtual event. While we were all pretty disappointed, we made the best with what we could and tried our hardest to make the experience valuable for all of our student members.

As 2nd Vice President, my job title was pretty much planning student events and symposium activities, a task that felt very obsolete when we found out we were switching to virtual. I took it as an opportunity to get creative and produced some fun content for our group including zoom calls on research posters, video interviews with ACASC Hall of Fame members, and other video or social media-based items. While it was a lot of extra work outside of school and clinic, I really enjoyed the opportunities that I had, the connections I made, and my overall experience. This weekend, it finally came to fruition and the symposium went off without a hitch! I learned a lot from the speakers and am excited to apply my knowledge to my patients in the clinical setting.

Tavia 2

To top off a great symposium weekend, it was a HUGE weekend for representation of NUHS. For the third year in a row, we had a student presenter in the annual Tom Hyde Student Research Poster Competition. This year, one of our Tri 9 interns, Tavia, presented her research on “Exploring the Relationship Between Respiratory Muscle Training and Exercise Performance” and placed 3rd overall! Not only was this the third year we had a student presenter, it was the third year our student made the podium! I was extremely impressed with her presentation, which was recorded in advance and played for all the sports chiropractors in attendance, but I was blown away by her ability to answer every question thrown at her during the live, Zoom-based, Q&A session. A very well-deserved award, so huge congratulations to her!

Student of the Year 2

Finally, I am very pleased to announce that I was recognized as the ACASC Student of the Year! This award is given to one student who has shown promise, grit, and effort in the field of sports chiropractic and significant involvement with the ACASC. There were many students that stepped up to the plate this year and helped to make the symposium, and the year as a whole, a success, despite setbacks from virtual learning and COVID. To be chosen as Student of the Year means so much to me and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to represent NUHS and students interested in sports chiropractic across the country. I really look forward to continuing my work with ACASC as a new doctor of chiropractic in the upcoming years!
